Only one boy invited me to the prom because everyone else was ashamed of my face… But when the police entered the gym, the whole school froze.

All my life, people have looked at my face before looking me in the eyes.

My name is Emily Carter, and I was born with a large birthmark on the left side of my cheek. It didn't hurt. It wasn't dangerous. But at school, it became my entire identity.

Not my notes.

Not my kindness.

Not the way I helped the teachers after class.

Only my face.

In my final year, I had learned how to disappear. I kept my dark hair on my cheek, I walked with my head down, and I avoided the mirrors in public restrooms because I already knew what I would see there.

A girl about whom people whispered.

A girl that no boy would ever invite to the prom.

At home, my mother tried to make life warm, even though she worked two jobs and came home exhausted almost every night. One evening, she put dinner in front of me and noticed that I wasn't eating.

"Emily, darling... what happened?"

"They put up the posters for the ball today," I whispered.

Her face softened.

"Are you thinking of going?"

I laughed sadly.

"Mom, nobody wants me there. I'll just be the girl standing in a corner while everyone stares at her."

She reached across the table and shook mine.

"You'll only have one prom, baby. Don't let cruel people steal all your memories."

I wanted to believe her.

But school had taught me not to hope.

The next morning, my best friend Olivia was waiting for me at the bus stop. She was the only person who had never treated me like I was broken.

"My mother wants me to go to the ball," I told her.

Olivia sighed.

"Mothers always believe in miracles."

When we arrived at school, I went to my locker. I opened it, took out my book, and then closed the door.

And I froze.

Ryan Miller was standing there.

Ryan was the most popular boy in school. Football jacket. Perfect smile. The kind of boy girls whispered about in the hallways. The kind of boy who never went near my locker unless something weird was going on.

"Hi, Emily," he said softly.

" Hi. "

"I wanted to ask you something."

My heart started beating too fast.

"Would you like to go to the ball with me?"

For a moment, I thought I had misheard.

I looked around, waiting for laughter. Telephone operator. Waiting for someone to shout, "We got you!"

But nobody laughed.

"Do you want to go with me?" I whispered.

"Yes," Ryan said. "I want it."

" For what ? "

The word came out harder than I had intended.

Ryan looked nervous.

"Because you're kind. And because I've seen how people treat you. It's not normal."

I looked for a lie on his face.

I couldn't find any.

So I said yes.

At lunch, Olivia almost dropped her sandwich when I told her about it.

"Emily... be careful."

"What do you mean?"

"Ryan doesn't just randomly invite unassuming girls to the ball. Someone chose them, that's not right."

I knew she wanted to protect me.

But a part of me was tired of being protected even from hope.

That afternoon, I went into the bathroom to wash my hands. Chloe Bennett came in behind me.

Chloe was rich, beautiful, popular, and cruel in a way that adults never noticed. She had made fun of my birthmark since first grade.

She smiled at me through the mirror.

"So... the ball with Ryan?"

I didn't say anything.

She leaned closer.

"Enjoy your only night out, darling. Make it count."

Then she left laughing.

That evening, I told my mother everything. She sat on my bed and held my hand.

"What if it's a joke?" I whispered.

"Then we'll know who he is," she said. "But you'll always know who you are."

For two nights, she altered an old blue dress from her closet. She worked by hand, even after long days, until the dress looked soft, simple, and beautiful.

When I tried it, she cried.

On the night of the ball, Ryan came to pick me up.

He handed me a bodice.

"You look beautiful, Emily."

I wanted to believe him so badly that it hurt.

In the car, he was silent. Too silent. He kept checking his phone and turning it face down on the seat.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

He forced a smile.

"Yes. Just nervous."

When we entered the gymnasium, everyone looked.

The lights were bright. The music made the floor shake. Girls in sparkling dresses turned their heads. Boys whispered. Phones appeared in hands.

Ryan took my hand and led me onto the dance floor.

And for a few minutes…

I've forgotten everything.

He held me gently. He looked at me as if I were important. He danced with me as if the whole school wasn't watching us.

Then someone shouted near the loudspeakers:

"Has Ryan decided to organize a charity event tonight?"

Laughter erupted around us.

Another voice shouted:

"Oh my God, did someone pay him to do that?"

The room started to spin.

My chest tightened.

Every laugh cut me off from the inside.

"Ryan," I whispered, "I want to leave."

"Emily, listen to me—"

"No. Please. I want to leave now."

His face changed. He nodded and guided me towards the exit.

The laughter followed us.

We were almost at the gates when they suddenly opened.

Three police officers entered the gymnasium.

The music stopped.

The room fell silent.

And they headed straight for Ryan.

The tallest policeman looked at him and said:

"Sir, you must come with us immediately."

My whole body went cold.

I grabbed Ryan's sleeve.

"What's going on? What did you do?"

The policeman looked at me in surprise.

"So you have no idea what Ryan did?"

I turned to Ryan.

His face had turned pale.

The entire gymnasium was staring at us.

Ryan looked at me, his eyes filled with guilt.

"Emily," he whispered, "I have to tell you everything."

My stomach knotted.

" What ? "

He swallowed with difficulty.

"Three weeks ago... Chloe and her friends offered me money to invite you to the ball."

My heart broke.

" Nope… "

"They wanted me to make you believe it was real. Then they wanted to reveal it was a joke while they filmed your reaction."

Tears filled my eyes.

"How could you?"

Ryan reached out his hand towards me, but I stepped back.

"I accepted," he said, his voice trembling. "But not for the reason you think."

The police officer turned towards the silent gymnasium.

And suddenly, everyone held their breath.

The rest is in the
