There she was: a brilliant yellow, speckled with tiny black dots, with long, dark spikes protruding from her body, like a miniature alien weapon. She didn't move. She didn't run. She simply lay pressed against the wall, perfectly still, as if waiting for me to notice her.
My first thought wasn't scientific. It was panic.
The worst explanations immediately sprang to mind: a mutant spider, a deadly tropical insect, a venomous creature, or something that had absolutely no business being in my home. I backed away slowly, observing it closely. The more I looked at it, the stranger it seemed.
Its body was small but terrifying, almost like a yellow shield adorned with black markings. Long, curved spines jutted from its sides, making it appear far more dangerous than it actually was. It seemed as if nature had designed it precisely to frighten men.
After a few minutes, curiosity overcame my fear. I approached slowly, hoping he would jump. He didn't. I took a picture and sent it to some friends.
The responses came quickly.
"Don't touch it."
"Set fire to the garage."
"It looks toxic."
